Provincial health officials spoke shortly after the premier with an update on the province's COVID-19 cases and measures being taken to curb the pandemic. Manitoba's chief provincial public health officer Dr. Brent Roussin announced one new case of COVID-19 in the province on Monday, bringing the total number of cases to 204. The total number of COVID-19-related deaths remains at two, he added. Also, Roussin said that in addition to practicing social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, people are encouraged to wear non-medical face masks to protect others from catching the virus through droplet spread, echoing the advice of Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam. He stressed that wearing the mask does not protect the individual wearing it from catching the virus, rather, it could help prevent further spread of the virus. Manitoba Premier Bria...

Patients dying of COVID-19 are disproportionately black. Chicago's mayor isn't surprised

Image
According to early data about the scope of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S., COVID-19 is hitting Americans of color especially hard. The CDC has not published racial breakdowns of deaths, but some states are -- and they show that patients dying of the disease are disproportionately black. That trend is evident in Chicago, whose mayor, Lori Lightfoot, joins Yamiche Alcindor to discuss. Coronavirus outbreak: Alberta Premier Kenney says 'probable' COVID-19 data predicts 400-3,100 deaths

Image
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney presented the latest COVID-19 modelling projections put together by provincial health officials to Albertans on Tuesday evening during a special address. Kenney called the COVID-19 pandemic “the greatest challenge of our time” and outlined a “probable” scenario, which suggested the province could hit the peak of its outbreak by mid-May and showed that the virus could claim between 400-3,100 Albertans’ lives by the end of summer. Kenney added that under a “more serious but less likely elevated scenario,” Alberta could see infections peak at the beginning of May, with as many as 1 million infections and between 500 and 6,000 deaths. The numbers presented by Kenney were based on modelling done by Alberta Health. As of Tuesday evening, Alberta had 1,373 positive cases of COVID-19 and 26 deaths. Coronavirus outbreak: Ontario confirms 21 new COVID-19-related deaths, total rises to 153 | FULL

Image
Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams and associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe delivered a daily update Tuesday on the province’s response to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Dr. Williams spoke about the shortage in medical supplies during the briefing, explaining that many countries were caught unprepared given the demand for masks and other supplies around the world. Williams compared the situation to the H1N1 pandemic and the SARS outbreak in Ontario and said in those cases, Ontario was able to more easily access supplies from other countries. Williams also said an investigation would need to be carried out into a shipment of $200,000 worth of masks delivered to Toronto care homes that had to be recalled. A statement released on Tuesday said the masks “did not meet the city’s standard and specifications.” Ontario reported 379 cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the provincial total to 4,726. The death toll increased to 153 after 21 new...
